Who I am and what I do.

I am a freelance photographer.

I have 16yrs experience of photographing archaeology in all its forms, using a variety of techniques and specialist equipment in London and the SE of England, predominantly. Prior to that I worked as a field archaeologist for 7yrs, digging and recording excavations. I have a keen interest in photography beyond the often prosaic requirements of archaeology and many of my skills are transferable.

My name is Strephon Duckering. My middle name is Jan. When I was a child my father wouId sometimes call me Strephon Jam. I enjoyed the joke and had forgotten it until it resurfaced in my memory soon after he died in 2019, hence Strephon Jam.

My experience includes photographing archaeology and historic buildings on sites that range from small excavations and buildings, to very large infrastructure projects such as those at London's King's Cross and London Bridge stations during the 2010s. Building sites and excavations are often dynamic and potentially dangerous environments to work in and getting good photographs here requires a high degree of awareness and concentration.

I am also proficient at photographing objects in a studio setting, in particular archaeological finds or artefacts. These are difficult subjects because archaeological finds are often incomplete or damaged. Even lowly fragments of decaying objects must be photographed with  clarity and accuracy or they risk being uninformative. Through my membership of the Association of Historical and Fine Art Photographers (AHFAP) I've taken inspiration from some of the worlds best museum and art gallery photographers and learned to photograph archaeological artefacts to a high standard. My work is widely and variously published in very many Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd.'s publications and reports and in the magazines and journals of London Archaeologist, British Archaeology (the magazine of the British Council of Archaeology), Current Archaeology and the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society (LAMAS).

Another significant aspect of my experience is in training field archaeologists in the use of DSLR cameras so that they can counter the often difficult conditions that can skew a camera's automatic settings.

In summary, I'm a proficient photographer with a wide range of knowledge and skills. I'm interested in nearly everything and everyone, which comes in very handy when describing the world through photographs.
